Theatre Academy for Media and Performance (THAMP) is organising a three-day theatre workshop for persons above 18 years of age. The workshop, conducted from Jan 26 to 28, would mark the beginning of regular monthly theatre workshops at the theatre space at Winners Nagar, Peroorkada, said THAMP founder and artistic director Rajesh Chandran T T.
Rajesh Chandran, a veteran theatre practitioner, said the monthly workshop is an attempt to re-generate the diminishing link, at least in the district, between modern theatre and the young generation.
Unlike in the late 70’s, 80’s and 90’s the number of youngsters turning to theatre, especially from campuses, is negligible in recent years. “One of the reasons for the emergence of such a chasm between the young generation, especially students, and theatre could be the dwindling number of opportunities for them to get to know about theatre and its unlimited scope. Maybe they expect more than what theatre as they know offers them at this juncture,” he said.
The first theatre workshop in Jan would focus on the acting side and its various kinds of possibilities.
The gaining popularity of mime on campuses and its new manifestations as a visual choreography underscore the admiration and love the youngsters keep towards the physical possibilities on stage, said Rajesh Chandran.
First, the form should fascinate them. Once that is done, content can manifest any time,” he said.
One among the core objectives of the workshop is to introduce various types of theatre and acting techniques in general. The participants would also get to watch the recorded performance of widely acclaimed theatre productions. Rajesh Chandran and Ajith M Gopinath would lead the first monthly workshop.
